Recent events have highlighted the fact that guns are now the leading cause of death for our children and teenagers. People don’t kill our young people. People with guns kill our children and teenagers. When is this nation going to do something concrete and substantial to stop this ongoing atrocity?

Two contributors to Speak Out June 3 had the right idea for preventing school shootings, more security. I agree. Ten-foot-high fences with razor wire on top and armed guards in towers around the perimeter would prevent anyone from entering with ill intent. Maybe we could just reopen the Joliet penitentiary for elementary school students. The children would be safe and have a positive learning environment.

It seems that when a Black or brown person commits a crime, there is no mention of race in the newspaper article. However, when the criminal is a white person, their race is identified. For example, Ted Slowik’s column told us it was four white juveniles who vandalized the fire station. Yet, the article about the gunman who killed four at a hospital didn’t indicate that he was Black. Unless the paper is publishing a description to help police capture a suspect, race shouldn’t matter any more than the perpetrators gender identity or sexual preference.

I totally agree that anyone with a mental issue should never be allowed to own a gun. I also agree that anyone with a mental condition should never be allowed to hold a public office.
