Eagle Scout candidate coordinates native planting

Boy Scout Troop 75 members and other volunteers planted about 500 native pollinator-friendly plants at Hobson West Ponds, 1047 S. West St., in a project coordinated by Eagle Scout candidate Austin Gianino.

“This is a park that our troop has adopted, and it was a nice opportunity to further beautify the area and give back to the community in a sustainable way,” 14-year-old Austin said in a news release of the May 22 event.

“My project consisted of planting a variety of native plants to make a pollinator garden and I look forward to seeing the garden transform over the next couple of months and watch it spring to life.”

The project was supported, in part, by a $977.50 Earth Day in the Parks grant awarded to the Naperville Park District and cosponsored by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the Ada L. Rice Foundation and the Illinois Conservation Foundation.

Park visitors can view the new pollinator gardens from turf trails which wind around the gardens and connect to the other natural areas of the park, including a small wooded area, two ponds and a prairie restoration area, the news release said.

Candace Parker among Time’s ‘most influential people’

Basketball player Candace Parker, a graduate of Naperville Central High School, was named as one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People of 2022.

Parker, who plays for the Chicago Sky, was noted for winning two WNBA championships, being a six-time WNBA All-Star and using her platform to highlight social issues.

In the magazine, Chicago-native and three-time NBA champion Dwyane Wade said Parker is inspiring the next generation and recently produced a feature-length documentary about how Title IX advanced the cause of gender equality.

Parker is the oldest person in WNBA history to record a triple double and is the third player in the WNBA to have multiple triple doubles in her career.

Forest preserve district seeks community input

The DuPage Forest Preserve District is asking residents for input on proposed plans for the Blackwell, Greene Valley and Waterfall Glen forest preserves at June 11 open houses to take place at each of the preserves.

Forest district staff will share their ideas for these preserves and ask for resident feedback on plans for recreational amenities, trails, restoration, facilities and infrastructure. The district is planning a series of projects to increase access to popular recreational amenities.

The Naperville-area open house will take place from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the Greene Valley parking lot on Greene Road south of 79th Street.

The Waterfall Glen open house will begin at 9 a.m. in Lemont and the Blackwell Silver Lake open house at 3:30 p.m. in Warrenville.
