An early morning fire New Year’s Day sparked by improperly discarded smoking materials caused $20,000 damage to a single-family home, garage and its contents in the Cedar Glen neighborhood on Naperville’s south side, according to Naperville fire reports.

Fire officials said occupants of a home in the 2200 block of Salisbury Drive evacuated before firefighters arrived just after 12:30 a.m. to find smoke showing from the attached garage of the two-story home. It took about an hour to extinguish the hot spots and remove the smoke from the home, the report said.

One person was treated on the scene for a minor injury, according to the report.

Fire officials said because the fire and smoke damage was mostly confined to the garage, the home was habitable.
