ESO holding music discussion on upcoming concert

The Elgin Symphony Orchestra is offering a free “Listeners Club” discussion at noon Feb. 2 at the Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin on the composers and music being featured at an upcoming concert.

ESO violinist Carolyn Dylan will talk about the music to be performed at the Feb. 5 and 6 concerts at the Hemmens, centering on Montgomery’s “Starburst,” Mendelssohn’s “Concerto for Violin in E Minor” and Beethoven’s “Eroica.”

Blood drive Sunday to honor young boy with cancer

Congregation Kneseth Israel in Elgin is holding a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, in honor of a child being treatment for leukemia whose family belongs to the synagogue.

Rabbi Margaret Frisch Klein said 1-year-old Benji Rasmussen is being treated at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. He has undergone a bone marrow transplant and received more than two dozen blood transfusions, and he will need more in the future, she said.

Versiti Blood Center of Illinois will conduct the drive at the congregation’s social hall at 330 Division St.

Donors do not need to be vaccinated against COVID-19 to give blood but will be required to wear masks. Anyone vaccinated on or before Dec. 30 is also eligible to donate.

Forest preserve snowshoe programs this winter

The Forest Preserve District of Kane County has scheduled four “Snowshoe Adventure” programs this winter to give participants the skills needed to be comfortable snowshoeing, organizers said.

After mastering skills like stride length, heel-toe step and climbing over obstacles, participants will hit the trail for a naturalist-guided hike at a Kane County forest preserve.

Participants can attend one or all four sessions to be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, at Camp Tomo Chi-Chi Knolls, 40W095 Freeman Road, Gilberts; 9 to 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 23, at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, 37W700 Dean St., St. Charles; 1 to 3 p.m. Friday. Feb. 11, at Bowes Creek Woods Forest Preserve, 9N420 Crawford Road, Elgin; and 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, at Burnidge Forest Preserve, 14N035 Coombs Road, Elgin.

The fee is $25 per person for each program, which includes equipment rental, skills training and guided hiking. Registration and shoe size are required one week prior to each program, which is open to anyone age 8 or older.

St. Charles offering free holiday lights recycling

From now through Jan. 17, St. Charles residents and businesses can drop off working or non-working holiday lights and extension cords for recycling at no cost.

Drop-off sites are located at Blue Goose Market, 300 S. Second St., available from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and the St. Charles Public Works Department, 1405 S. Seventh Ave., open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Traditional holiday lights, LED holiday lights, Italian mini holiday lights, rope lights and extension cords will be accepted.

Items that won’t be accepted include lighted garland, wreaths and trees and lighted lawn decorations and ornaments.
