Hinsdale Humane Society (HHS) is hosting a new event this fall called the Big (and Small!) Dog BBQ on Saturday, Oct. 2 outside the Pet Rescue & Resource Center at 21 Salt Creek Lane in Hinsdale from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The event is geared toward adopters and their alumni pets, volunteers, and supporters of HHS.
It’s also a chance for adopted pets to (possibly) meet their littermates.
“We just thought it would be a fun way to get people together and end the summer off, and really targeting this toward adopters,” said Dee Downs, Event Coordinator at Hinsdale Humane Society. “We’ve had a lot of requests lately for people wanting to meet their pups litter mates so we just thought — I mean can’t guarantee that’s going to happen — but we just thought it’d be fun if we had that out there.”
Downs said several people reached out to HHS about having been in a park, or somewhere, and coming across their dog’s littermates, and the interest is only growing. “One of our adopters sent us a picture of four pups playing together from the same litter. I don’t know how they figured out they were related but it’s really great,” she said.
HHS has a loyal following and people are always excited to come back and reunite with the staff and animal caretakers, Downs added. “And people do run into litter mates at our events. Or they’ll ask us and we can sometimes figure it out just based on when they adopted,” she said. “You never know, maybe you’ll find your long lost littermate.”
The event itinerary includes whiskey tasting for adults, face painting for kids, burgers and brats and vegetarian options.
According to a news release, there will also be raffle items, a beer pull, bags tournament and Diesel’s Doggie Ice Cream for the pups.

Downs noted the HHS facility will be open for adoptions during the event.
