player ready...Following a successful breeding season earlier this spring, Shedd Aquarium has welcomed another Magellanic penguin chick.
This third penguin chick hatched May 12 and weighed 78 grams during the first checkup with the aquarium’s animal care team. The first chick arrived April 29, with the second hatched May 5.
In April, Magellanic and rockhopper penguins began to build nests in order to get ready for breeding season.
All three penguin chicks continue to grow and meet important milestones at just a few weeks old, according to a statement from the aquarium. The birth of these Magellanic penguin chicks are particularly significant as they contribute to the aquarium’s conservation effort in a cooperatively managed Species Survival Plan.
Although the hatchlings remain behind-the-scenes, guests can meet a penguin starting June 4 as on-site and in-person penguin encounters are back at Shedd Aquarium.
