Middle schools should be named after prominent Waukeganites

I saw a piece about Waukegan concerning the changing of the names of Thomas Jefferson and Daniel Webster middle schools. Although this saddens me, I understand the growing concerns under which we live. I also heard some of the new name possibilities, and was surprised that none of them included some of the notable people who were born or lived in Waukegan.

One of the most notable, of course, would be Ray Bradbury, but other prominent Waukeganites include Dorothy Cole, Admiral Richard Lansing Connolly, Jerry Orbach and Orion P. Howe, just to name a few. Since we already have the third middle school named after another one of our own, Jack Benny, we have already set a precedent, and it would make perfect sense to continue the pattern. It would also give all three middle schools an impression of continuity.

It would be my hope that the school board, which has this most important task at hand, consider these other equally viable possibilities and not make their final decision in haste. The future students who walk through these halls should learn about some of the people who also lived and walked through the town of Waukegan.

Although I no longer live in Waukegan, I still have my roots there. It will always be my home, and I care. Change is inevitable. It is how we make the change relevant is what is important to remember.
