After nine consecutive days of snowfall, winter at last cut Chicago a break — for a day.
No snow was recorded Wednesday at the city’s weather station at O’Hare International Airport, stopping just short of breaking a 78-year-old record for most days with snow in a row. But more snow fell Thursday, as Chicago, suburban transportation departments and state road crews continued to clean up following this week’s 36-hour snowstorm and the area looked forward to a gradual thaw starting this weekend.
After working on side streets Wednesday, Chicago’s Department of Streets and Sanitation turned its salt spreaders back to keeping main streets and Lake Shore Drive clear, the agency said.
Snow showers Thursday morning moved up through Illinois and lingered in some parts of the Chicago area, with an additional 1 to 2 inches of snow expected for communities north of Northerly Island, according to the National Weather Service’s Chicago office.
By midday, 2.6 inches had fallen in Northbrook, with 2.2 inches in Schaumburg, 2 inches in Evanston and 1.7 inches in Oak Park, according to the weather service. Brief bursts of heavier snow fell in the northwest and west suburbs and some counties west of the Chicago area, according to the weather service.
Most of Illinois’ roads were at least partly covered with ice or snow Thursday, according to a winter road conditions map from the Illinois Department of Transportation.
After chances of snow Thursday evening, more was due Sunday, when temperatures were expected to reach the low 30s, according to the weather service.
