The Chicago Cubs added catching depth Friday, reportedly signing Austin Romine to a one-year, $1.5 million deal.

Romine, 32, slashed .238/.259/.323 with two home runs and 17 RBIs in 37 games last season with the Detroit Tigers.

He has a career .239/.278/.361 slash line with 27 home runs and 152 RBIs in 405 games with the New York Yankees (2011, ’13-19) and Tigers (’20).

Romine had a career-best .281 average (64-for-228) with the Yankees in 2019 and set career highs in homers (10) and RBIs (42) in 2018.

Last month, the Cubs traded catcher Victor Caratini and pitcher Yu Darvish to the San Diego Padres for pitcher Zach Davies and four prospects.

Willson Contreras, the team’s starting catcher, has been the subject of trade rumors.
