A woman has died and three men, including one of the assailants, were critically wounded Wednesday evening in separate shootings a half-hour apart on the city’s West Side.

Earlier, police said the people shot were considered “victims” who were shot in a single “targeted” attack in the 3000 block of West Roosevelt Road.

About 4 p.m. in the 400 block South Hamlin Avenue, 21-year-old Catrice Ware and a 29-year-old man were in a vehicle traveling south on Independence Boulevard when a dark-colored car pulled up and somebody inside shot them both, Chicago police said.

Ware, who was shot in the abdomen and leg, was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital at 4:45 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office, while the 29-year-old man, shot in the right leg, was also taken to Mount Sinai, where his condition had stabilized.

About a half an hour later, another 29-year-old man was standing with a group of people on the northwest corner of Roosevelt Road and Whipple Street, outside a liquor store, when a westbound silver car pulled up, “stopped right in front” of them, and three gunmen exited and started firing — hitting the 29-year-old in the abdomen, police said.

Two of the gunmen then ran into the liquor store and continued shooting — one of them accidentally shooting his 32-year-old accomplice — police said. The other shooter dragged him from the liquor store and helped get him back into the silver car and they fled to Mount Sinai, where they dropped off the 32-year-old man, police said.

“It appears to be targeted,” Area 4 Deputy Chief Ernest Cato told reporters at the scene of the Roosevelt Road attack. “They knew exactly who they were shooting at.”
