player ready...In its inaugural showing last winter, “Lightscape,” the Chicago Botanic Garden’s first big holiday lights show, was a hit. The garden sold almost every available ticket to its outdoor walk through curated illumination displays, and those 175,000 visitors pushed the Glencoe attraction to a year-end finish with the highest attendance in its 48-year history.
So this year, pandemic and all, the garden will do it again, and tickets are already on sale to members, officials there announced this week.
Concessions to COVID-19, which scientists predict will still be with us through the winter, include limiting visitor capacity per timeslot, ensuring people observe the one-way trail and holding the entire event outdoors.
But the attraction, which followed a roughly one-mile trail through the north suburban horticultural haven, will also get a new pathway and new lighting features, a plan that the show’s designer was already talking about as she showed off the first edition last year.

“As we looked to bring ‘Lightscape’ back this year during these challenging times, we felt it was important to continue to offer this seasonal event and allow visitors to enjoy the beauty, and peace of mind, of being outdoors” amid friends and family, Harriet Resnick, a garden vice president, said in a statement.
“Lightscape” will open Friday Nov. 13 and run through Jan. 3, 2021. Tickets, which run $24 and up for adults, go on sale to the general public Aug. 25. They and more information can be found at chicagobotanic.org/lightscape.
