As COVID-19 cases rise in DuPage County, the local Health Department’s testing site closed early Tuesday after two hours of testing.

The testing site, open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, is on the east side of the DuPage County complex on County Farm Road in Wheaton. People who want to get tested can drive up, roll down their windows and conduct nasal swab tests on themselves with provided instructions.

But some residents were left without the option to get tested Tuesday. Health Department spokesperson Don Bolger said the county is capped at 400 tests per day because of state lab capacity.

“I think the county has been doing the best that they possibly can,” said Ashley Nuzzo, 33, who lives in Bloomingdale and commented on the Health Department’s Facebook post about the closing. “I think anybody can only do as much as their resources can allow.”

Bolger said DuPage has plans to increase its testing capacity but said he could not share details Tuesday. He encouraged people to arrive at the testing site as early as possible. For people who have obligations that prevent them from arriving early, Bolger said he recommends people make reservations to get tested at Pillars Community Health Family Health Center at Anne M. Jeans Elementary School in Willowbrook. People can call 708-745-5277 for reservations.

“We just know that a lot of people showed up today,” Bolger said.

He said the large number of people seeking testing is not unusual on Tuesdays. Since the site is closed Sundays and Mondays, the county sees an uptick when it reopens.

But the county’s Health Department Twitter page shows that the test site closed between about 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in recent weeks, with Tuesday’s 9 a.m. closing the earliest.

The county saw 103 new cases reported July 19, a number not seen since May 27, according to DuPage County data. The county’s total cases have reached more than 10,300.

“Sites shouldn’t be running out of tests at this point,” said 44-year-old Joseph Baker, a Villa Park resident in DuPage County who also commented on the department’s Facebook post. “It seems like what they’re describing is the lab can’t process the samples fast enough.”

Nuzzo has children who will be returning to school in the fall. She hopes to see testing expanded for DuPage residents.

“I just want to thank all of the county workers for doing what they’re doing,” she said.
