A Hazel Crest man has been charged in the death of a driver whose car he struck early Friday morning on Interstate 94 South at 73rd Street, state police said.
The crash was reported at 3:53 a.m. after the driver of a red Chevrolet Camaro failed to reduce his speed and slammed into a black Ford Crown Victoria that burst into flames on impact, Illinois State Police said in a statement.
The Crown Victoria’s driver died at the scene, police said. Their identity has not been released.
The Camaro’s driver, identified as 47-year-old Daryl L. Garrett, was taken to a local hospital, state police said.
Neither vehicle had any passengers, a state police spokeswoman said.

Garrett was charged the following day with one count of aggravated driving under the influence resulting in death, a Class 2 felony that carries a sentence of three to 14 years in prison.
Police did not immediately release what evidence led them to charge Garrett, whose bond was set at $50,000.
He posted bond Sunday and was released from custody, police said.
