The Geneva Park District Thursday said it has received complaints that some people using the parks in the city are not practicing social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic.

The district said it has issued a reminder for park users to follow national public health recommendations of practicing safe social distancing and keeping a six-foot distance from others while in parks and using trails.

“We have received numerous complaints from residents regarding park users ignoring vital rules and regulations as they relate to preventing the spread of the COVID-19 virus,” according to the statement released by the district. “We implore everyone choosing to utilize our parks to stay off playground equipment, do not gather in groups larger than four and maintain six feet of social distancing at all times.

“It is every resident’s responsibility to work toward eradicating this dangerous virus,” the statement said.

Officials said they want people to use the district’s open spaces to maintain physical and mental health, but within the guidelines set due to the pandemic.

District officials said they support the guidelines of the National Recreation and Park Association. The association has said that during the coronavirus outbreak, people should refrain from using parks or trails if they are exhibiting symptoms and follow guidance that has been announced concerning hand washing.

Those using parks should prepare for limited access to public restrooms or water fountains, and while on trails, warn other users of their presence and step aside to let others pass, according to the association.

The association said that social distancing of six feet from other individuals should be maintained at all times, and if that is not possible, users should find an alternate location in the park or leave the area.
