A Winnetka resident was injured in a Friday night apartment fire in the village’s downtown, authorities said.

Winnetka firefighters responded to a fire alarm call for service around 7:30 p.m. Friday evening for a report of a fire at an apartment building in the 800 block of Elm Street. They were met by a resident who stated that, “his living room was on fire,” Winnetka Fire Chief Alan Berkowsky said.

Observing black smoke coming from an apartment window, the crew found a working fire on the third floor and quickly extinguished the blaze, Berkowsky said.

“The Firefighters were able to make a quick stop,” Berkowsky said. “Another two or three minutes and the apartment would have flashed over causing a major fire and most likely causing significant damage to neighboring apartments and businesses below.”

The occupant of the third-floor unit was transported to Evanston Hospital where he was treated for facial injuries. Fire damage to his apartment has caused an estimated loss of $25,000, Berkowsky said.

Three other apartment doors were forced open to check for occupancy and fire damage, but the only uninhabitable unit in the building is the unit where the fire started, Berkowsky said.

The fire remains under investigation.
