When the holiday season comes to a close, many residents will begin to strip lights and other decorations from their homes and front yards, and the streets of Barrington will return to the glow of only street lamps and porch lights.
Some residents simply throw away faulty and unwanted holiday light strands. Others toss them back in a box to be stowed away for the next 11 months.
But the village is offering a way to dispose of unwanted lights.
The Barrington Public Works Department, partnered with Elgin Recycling and is offering a holiday lights recycling program. Old lights can be dropped off at the main entrance of the Public Works facility, at 300 North Raymond Avenue, up until March 30.
All colors and lengths of mini, Italian, C7, C9, rope and LED lights are accepted, as well as extension cords, according to village officials.
Garland, live greens, wreaths and other non-recyclables are not accepted. Neither are electronics, plastic bags, photos, magazines, greeting cards or newspapers. Electronics, magazines, greeting cards and newspapers can instead be recycled curbside according to their respective programs, officials said.
