All public school districts are required to report their use of seclusion to the U.S. Department of Education. Enter a district’s name below to see how many incidents it reported for the 2015-16 school year, as well as to see more recent numbers based on an analysis of public records. Requests were sent to all districts that had reported secluding students previously.

Note: There are known flaws with the self-reported federal data; for example, some districts reported having more students with disabilities than total students. Some districts that previously used seclusion have stopped. Although reporters’ public-records requests sought detailed incident reports, some districts provided only the total number of incidents. Nine districts declined to provide records.
