Even casual observers of “Sesame Street” have long wondered whether the rumors were true — are Bert and Ernie gay? Former Sesame Street writer Mark Saltzman said in an interview with Queerty released Sunday that, indeed, they are.
“I always felt that without a huge agenda, when I was writing Bert & Ernie, they were,” he told Queerty, adding that he took inspiration from his own relationship. During the time Saltzman wrote for the show, he said, he thinks he was the only male writer out as a gay man.
He added, “I don’t think I’d know how else to write them, but as a loving couple.”
However, not everyone considers the matter settled: Sesame Workshop, the educational group behind the show, tweeted
