A Gary man is in custody after a traffic stop turned into foot chase Saturday afternoon.
At around 3:07 p.m. June 20, a Porter County Sheriff’s officer attempted to stop a driver for a minor traffic violation in the area of Central Avenue and Brandt Street in Portage, Porter County Sheriff spokeswoman Sgt. Jamie Erow said in a release. The officer pursued the man — identified as 24-year-old Carl L. Echols — through Portage and toward U.S. 20, according to the release.
When the two got to an area near a building in the 8900 block of E 6th Avenue, in the Woodlake Village Apartment Complex in Gary’s Miller section, Echols exited his vehicle and a foot chase ensued, the release said. The officer tried to taze Echols as he fled, but Echols was unaffected.
The officer did finally apprehend Echols as they rounded the corner of the building, the release said.
The release said the officer, Paul Czupryn, sustained a knee injury and was subsequently transported to Porter Regional Hospital. Echols was taken to Porter County Jail on charges of Level 6 felony Resisting, Never Obtaining a License Misdemeanor and a Probation Violation warrant out of LaPorte County.
The Portage and Ogden Dunes Police Departments, as well as Porter EMS, Precision Towing and Porter County Central Communications, assisted.
