Following up on what authorities described as concerns voiced by residents of a Warren Township apartment complex about possible drug sales in parking areas, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man Saturday in the complex parking lot.

Lewis E. Shamberg of the 33000 block of North Greentree Road in unincorporated Grayslake was arrested after a sheriff’s deputy and his K-9 partner found prepackaged marijuana, a syringe containing heroin and more than two grams of cocaine in his car, reports said.

According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office release, Shamberg was arrested Saturday and charged with felony possession of cannabis with intent to deliver, possession of cannabis and possession of a controlled substance. He also faces misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a hypodermic syringe.

Shamberg was remanded to the Lake County jail with bail set at $20,000 and a court appearance scheduled for Wednesday.

According to sheriff’s officials, authorities had received recent calls from residents of an apartment complex in the 32000 block of N. John Mogg Road in Warren Township, near Grayslake.

On Saturday, a deputy and his K-9 partner responded to a new report of a suspicious vehicle at the complex, and the deputy smelled marijuana in the vicinity of the car, according to sheriff’s reports.

The deputy deployed the dog to sniff the exterior of the vehicle and the dog “alerted,” indicating the presence of narcotics in the car, which Shamberg had been driving, reports said.

Located and seized were a total of 123 grams of cannabis packaged in plastic bags; paraphernalia including a scale, packaging material and a glass pipe; and a used hypodermic syringe containing heroin, and 2.5 grams of cocaine, according to reports.
