Montgomery authorities want to curb fireworks and noise violations, and this summer police will have some new tools at their disposal to do so.

Residents can now be fined if wrappers or evidence of pyrotechnics is found on a suspect’s property. A first-time offense could result in a fine of $50-$75 and could increase to $750 for multiple time offenders.

In the past, few citations were issued for illegal fireworks because police had to catch a person igniting a device, and suspects often would light a firework and run, police said. The new approach will allow police to keep Montgomery a quieter place, authorities said.

Sgt. Ismael Diaz talked about the fireworks issue Wednesday during a crime workshop meeting that was broadcast live on Facebook. It was the first crime workshop under new Police Chief Phillip Smith.

Two years ago, police were called more than 100 times by residents complaining about fireworks and noise. Calls dropped to about 60 last year. Diaz said there have been five fireworks calls already this year, and police will be ready for more as the July 4 holiday approaches. Police are prepared to confiscate illegal fireworks, Diaz said.

Police also plan to use decibel level readers to gauge whether residents should receive a citation for noise.
