A man found guilty of killing his girlfriend in his Lake Station home and leaving her body to decompose was sentenced Friday to 70 years in prison.

Judge Salvador Vasquez sentenced Jovanni Torres, 32, to 60 years for the shooting death of Aimee Giro, 26.

Vasquez also tacked on a 10-year gun enhancement to Torres’ sentence.

“At your current age, you probably won’t see the light of day,” Vasquez said as members of Giro’s family embraced in the audience.

Vasquez called Torres a “manipulative, violent person” who failed to show any sort of remorse during the proceedings. “The idea that (Giro’s) father would have to find her body is absolutely horrific, absolutely pathetic.”

Juan Giro-Cruz, Giro’s father, said after the trial that he’s “relieved” Torres received “the right sentence.”

“Maybe he gets to regret (the action) he took,” Giro-Cruz said. “But it can’t release the whole pain. How am I going to explain it to my grandsons when they ask, ‘Where’s my titi?’ and why did he do it? So many questions.”

When police went to Torres’ house Oct. 5, 2016, there was foil on the windows, flies around the door and the smell of a decomposing body inside, deputy prosecutor Aleksandra Dimitrijevic said.

Giro was probably shot two times, according to testimony at trial. Investigators found a Hi-Point .45-caliber gun wrapped in a robe at Torres’ house that matched a bullet recovered from Giro’s wrist, prosecutors said.
