Tell a transit (horror) story
Sponsored by WBEZ and Vocalo, the Moth Storyslam series is always a popular draw, as droves of folks pack a rotating series of venues to drink and hear amateur storytellers recite remarkable tales on a particular topic. There’s a show on President’s Day, and, in this case, the stories are all about transit and its wonderful messes. The show begins at 7 p.m. Monday at SPACE (1245 Chicago Ave., Evanston). While tickets are unfortunately sold out online, there will be standby tickets available at the door. If you’re that interested, show up early, and plan for an extra drink. Tickets: $10. themoth.org
Dream of a better drive
There’s always the Auto Show! The local staple remains a big deal and draws big crowds to its McCormick Place (2301 S. King Drive) home, many of whom are from out of town. President’s Day marks the final day of this year’s show, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and baiduhai kindly documented the highs and lows of the 2018 edition. Even you’re not a car nerd, anyone you can always look and dream, right? Tickets: $7 – $13, tickets.drivechicago.com. 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Take a warm walk
Garfield Conservatory (300 N. Central Park Ave.) might be the city’s most underrated place to get some fresh air, especially since it’s available year-round, and, being a greenhouse, stays warm year-round as well. While it offers a number of classes — Monday’s is a 10 a.m. session on Morning Glories — you can always just take a stroll through the scenic, all-glass building. garfieldconservatory.org
See ‘Get Out’ for free
Never saw “Get Out”? Filmmaker Jordan Peele is teaming with Universal Pictures to offer free screenings of the movie 7 p.m. Monday at select theaters nationwide. In the Chicago area, that means the AMC River East 21 (322 E. Illinois St.) AMC Crestwood 18 (13221 Rivercrest Drive, Crestwood) AMC Streets of Woodfield 20 (601 N. Martingale Rd, Suite 105, Schaumburg). Tickets are available on a first come, first served basis and are available for pickup only on the day of the screening. getoutoneyearlater.com
Hit the sticks
If you’re looking for a little competition, consider the NBA Jam tournament at Emporium Arcade Bar Logan Square (2363 N Milwaukee Ave.). The name is a little misleading — the arcade-based competition features video games from “NBA Jam” and “Madden 18” to classic fun fare like pinball, foosball and air hockey, with more than 15 games being played in all. Prizes have yet to be announced, but it’s free to sign up, so get to training those thumbs. emporiumchicago.com/olympics
