Chicago's 1-mile pharmacy deserts, 2015
University of Illinois at Chicago researcher Dima Qato compiled the census tracts where there wasn't a pharmacy within 1 mile in 2015. All 13 of these tracts are in Southwest, South, Far South and Southeast side community areas that are majority black.

2016 data from the Cook County medical examiner's office show that community areas where opioid-related deaths are higher than the Chicago average are overwhelmingly on the South and West sides. In some of these community areas, such as O'Hare, Hegewisch, Riverdale, West Pullman and Fuller Park, there was one or fewer active pharmacies as of June 2017.
