Rather than putting a ton of effort into an outing and then only hitting one spot, why not extend the adventure? This week, we’re pairing breakfast at Cafe Marie-Jeanne with a trip to the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art.
Main attraction: Cafe Marie-Jeanne
1001 N. California Ave. 773-904-7660
How much: $3 and up
The Humboldt Park cafe quickly became a neighborhood favorite when it opened in 2016, and a visit for breakfast is a great way to kick off a European-style day date. Try the breakfast sandwich ($11) with boudin noir (blood sausage) and an egg and cheese on wheat or an English muffin, or add caviar ($5) if you’re feeling a little fancy. Drink all the coffee you need, because your date isn’t over yet.
Don’t stop: Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art
2320 W. Chicago Ave. 773-227-5522
How much: Free ($5 suggested donation)
Hop on the bus or bundle up and walk about a mile to the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art, the nearly 50-year-old Ukrainian Village gallery. Through Jan. 28, you can explore the CIM exhibition, which features works from seven first- and second-generation Ukrainian-American and Ukrainian contemporary artists. UIMA is open from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday-Sunday.
