Just over 10 years ago, a mixed voice madrigal group from Barrington High School was invited to perform at the White House during Advent. Directed by Nancie Tobison, the ensemble was thrilled to sing in this venerable venue and explore the sights and sounds of the District of Columbia. My son, Eric, was in that fortunate group, and later, our daughter Brittany twice had the honor of this “unforgettable” experience. Over time, the ensemble has changed to include Barrington-area parents and other adults.
This year’s group recently returned with equally enthralling experiences. Scott Badskey, of Tower Lakes, has been fortunate enough to sing in the White House four times, and his wife, Christine has sung thrice. They have also previously served as chaperones and organizers for the high school students.
“The White House is always beautiful, but this year it was exceptionally beautiful with all of the white decoration,” Scott said. “The day at the White House was magical.

“Since we arrived before the day’s tours, we were fortunate to be able to enter rooms which are normally not accessible … Probably the highlight was being able to go onto the South Lawn and greet the president. It was a surreal experience to see the helicopters fly over the capital then to see Marine One land with the president.
“The days’ magic continued with a wonderful cruise on the Potomac River where we saw the Lighted Boat Christmas Parade followed by fireworks over the capital. It was an amazing finish to a wonderful day,” he added.
Chris Rudolphi, of Inverness has also sung at the White House four times. His most unique memories include combining forces with Nancie’s high school madrigal group from Anthem, Ariz., where she now teaches. “They are a great bunch of kids and we all had fun,” he said.
He also enjoyed their early White House access.
“We arrived early and were allowed access to the library, China room and Vermeil room on the ground floor. These are normally roped off from visitors. This provided a new perspective on the beautiful rooms.”
Chris also relished the Marine One landing experience after the performance.
“Many in our group, including Nancie and (Chris’ wife) Sheila, shook his hand and said “hello,” he said. Watching the “Today Show” coverage of the president’s return the next morning, we caught a glimpse of Scott on TV!”
What a great way to herald the holiday season!
