Traffic on Green Bay Road in Winnetka was shut in both directions for more than an hour Thursday after a driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a building immediately south of the Winnetka-Glencoe border, officials said.
The crash, which took place around 4:20 p.m., occurred after the driver of a Toyota heading south on Green Bay allegedly lost control near the Green Bay-Linden Avenue intersection, according to Richard Weiner, Glencoe’s deputy public safety chief.
The car hit a curb, then continued south, crossing Scott Avenue into Winnetka before hitting the building on the southeast corner of the Green Bay-Scott intersection, he said.
The car went through the plate glass window of Grace Nails at 1007 Green Bay Road, Winnetka Fire Chief Alan Berkowsky said. He said the building appeared to be structurally sound but was being checked.
The driver, a 58-year-old Highwood man, was cited for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident, Weiner said.
Winnetka Deputy Fire Chief John Ripka said damage to the building was initially estimated at $75,000 to $100,000. He said the car slightly penetrated a wall within the building into a vacant space that previously housed a restaurant.
Winnetka paramedics treated and released the driver and one other person who was inside the nail salon for minor injuries, Berkowsky said.
