Covelli said the man’s car was then struck on its passenger side by a Nissan Rogue, driven by a 58-year-old McHenry man.
The driver of the Taurus was pronounced dead at the scene, which is west of Route 12 near Volo. The statement added that the identity of the driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was not being released early Tuesday pending notification of his family.
The driver of the Nissan was transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington with non-life threatening injuries.
An autopsy of the driver is pending by the Lake County Coroner’s Office, officials said.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
Sheriff’s crash investigators were assisted by the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team and Lakemoor Police, Covelli said.
