Doniesha N. Chew, 18, of the 300 block of West 42nd Place, was charged with aggravated battery to a merchant and retail theft following the Nov. 24 incident at the Carson Pirie Scott department store, police said.
Police said officers were called to the store shortly after 3 p.m., when store security agents reported that a group of men and women, who the agents reportedly recognized as previous theft offenders, were in the store.
Two security agents stopped Chew as she allegedly walked out of the store wearing a pair of Ugg boots that she hadn’t paid for.
When police arrived, the agents handed Chew over to them, along with a canister of Dragon Fire red pepper spray, according to the police report. Police said one security agent told officers Chew allegedly pulled the canister from her purse and sprayed both her and her partner.
One security agent was taken to hospital for treatment after he was sprayed, while the other agent escaped injury because the spray only hit her clothes, according to Wilmette Deputy Chief Patrick Collins.
According to police reports, nine others – two men and seven women – were temporarily detained during the incident. The men were 18 and 19 years of age, while the women ranged in age from 17 to 20, police said. All but one gave Chicago addresses, police said; one man refused to give an address.
All nine were released without charges, police said.
Chew’s next court date is Dec. 6 in Cook County Court, Skokie, Collins said.
Chew could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
