A double shooting at a Lawndale gas station left one man in critical condition and another in serious condition early Saturday, authorities said.
The men were among at least nine people wounded in shootings on the city’s South and West sides on Saturday, according to Chicago police.
The Lawndale shooting happened about 8:05 a.m., when the men, ages 29 and 20, were standing on the sidewalk near a BP gas station in the 1200 block of South Independence Boulevard, at the corner of West Roosevelt Road, police said in a media notification.
A few men approached and started shooting.
The 29-year-old was shot in the hand, arm, chest and leg, and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. The 20-year-old was shot in the leg and also was taken to Mount Sinai, authorities said. The older man was listed in critical condition, and the younger man was listed as serious, police said.
Authorities and witnesses said at least two men were seen running away from the shooting scene.
Once authorities arrived, police tape stretched from the northeast corner of the BP gas station in the 3800 block of Roosevelt Road out along the southern side of Independence Boulevard.
Across the street at a GoLo gas station, manager Abdullah Aldeiban, 52, said Saturday’s attack was not unusual.
“This will happen all the time,” Aldeiban said. “And sometimes the police have to come in and close us when it does.”
Eugene Adams, 54, has worked at the GoLo for four years. He said he was working in the back when he heard gunshots just after 8 a.m.
He went outside and saw two bodies on the ground near the BP, along with a few men sprinting away.
“I had to step back in,” Adams said. “I didn’t want them to shoot me too.”
