Two horses were killed Friday after running into the street and being struck by a vehicle in Palos Township, a spokeswoman for the Cook County Sheriff’s Office said.

The animals had bucked off their riders for an unknown reason before running off a trail about 1:30 p.m. in a forest preserve near 95th Street and Kean Avenue, the spokeswoman said.

The driver of the Chevy that struck them was taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, she said.

One of the horses was killed on impact. The other was put down by a Hickory Hills police officer.

The riders, who were not the horses’ owners, were not injured, the spokewoman said.
