Fourth-graders Grace Reid and Victoria Brabenec said they love to read, which led them to St. Cyprian School’s Family Reading Night on Oct. 26.
Reid said her favorite books include “Dork Diaries,” along with many others.
“I like the book fair, and I love reading books,” she said. “They’re my favorite.”
Family Reading Night consisted of a book fair and different family activities, all related to reading, according to Principal Joe Quinlan.
“This is to encourage the kids to read,” he said. “It’s the most important skill besides math.”
Students were able to purchase books from the fair. They also were able to go into different classrooms throughout the school for different activities. Some rooms offered a chance to participate in puppet making, creating Halloween bookmarks and an open mic, among others.

“The students can receive stickers for each classroom they visit,” Quinlan said. “If they attend four rooms, they can have a dress down day.”
Reid said her favorite activity of the evening was making bookmarks and mud pie.
Brabenec dressed up as Aunt Sponge from “James and the Giant Peach.” She said the book by Roald Dahl is one of her favorites.
“She’s really funny,” she said of the character of Aunt Sponge. “I did the open mic night, too. It’s really fun.”
John Hoeflich is a student at St. Cyprian who dressed up as Waldo from the “Where’s Waldo” books.
“I really liked making puppets and bookmarks,” he said.
Rubi Ortiz brought her daughter Julianna to Family Reading Night. She said her daughter is in kindergarten and loves to read books.
“She enjoys being with her peers and seeing her teachers after school hours,” she said of Family Reading Night. “This promotes her love of reading.”
Julianna said she likes to read anything with Disney characters or “Frozen.”
Emery and Stephanie Rosales brought their preschooler, Cece, as well.
“It was important to me to come with my family and buy my daughter books,” Emery Rosales said. “She loves to read ‘Peppa Pig.’ “
“We feel safe with our daughters attending St. Cyprian,” Stephanie Rosales added. “The teachers are hands-on. It’s a great school.”
