There were plenty of wonder women, some caped avengers, and even one heroic dinosaur at the Winnetka Park District’s Superhero Beach Dash, one organizer said Monday.

Almost 50 people took part in the run, Winnetka Park District recreation supervisor Kevin Rutherford said.

“It went, well, super,” he joked. “We even had a T-Rex with a superhero cape on.”

The race, which began with participants routed through obstacles on Tower Road Beach, snaked back up the beach cliff to Sheridan Road and south to Centennial Beach, has been an annual event since 2013, Rutherford said last week.

The run had two categories, competitive and non-competitive, which Rutherford said allowed families with children to take their time navigating the obstacles. Those included log and wall climbs of various heights and styles, a tunnel to maneuver through, and tire-runs.

Perhaps the biggest obstacle, Rutherford said, was geographic: “I think the toughest part is just running up and down the ramps to get to and from the beach. That’s a heck of a climb.”

Many of the runners had fun with the dash, sporting superhero-themed t-shirts and masks to hide their identities, and at least one young Wonder Woman led a pack of children through one set of obstacles.

As for the T-Rex? He didn’t run very fast, Rutherford said.
