Glencoe public safety officials are investigating the cause of an early morning motorcycle crash that killed a Bourbonnais man on Sept. 21.

George Berdebes, 29, was pronounced dead when Glencoe public safety units arrived at the scene – the intersection of Lake-Cook and Sheridan roads – just before 7 a.m., Glencoe Deputy Chief Richard Weiner said. Weiner said Berdebes was the only person on the motorcycle.

Weiner said the single-vehicle crash took place in the curve of the intersection. The mishap closed the intersection for more than six and a half hours; Weiner said it was reopened to traffic shortly after 1:30 p.m.

A statement from the Glencoe Public Safety Department issued Friday said Berdebes was part of a group of motorcyclists seen by an officer traveling northbound on Sheridan Road sometime before the crash. The officer attempted to stop the group at 1:45 a.m., but the motorcyclists increased speed and pulled away from the officer, it said.

The investigation should be completed in two to three weeks, it said.

The major case assistance team of NORTAF, the North Regional Task Force, will help Glencoe officials investigate the crash, Weiner said.
