The protests quieted, the folks living under the Wilson and Lawrence avenue viaducts are moving on, the tents and other belongings were cleared away — but what exactly is the city planning to do under those bridges along Lake Shore Drive?

Part of the work is to repair the crumbling viaducts, but the part that will displace the tent encampments is the shifting of bike lanes. The 14-foot-wide sidewalks where the tents were pitched, often covering half to three-quarters of the walkway, will now be split in two parts: 8 feet for pedestrians and 6 feet for bikes .

Each viaduct project will cost nearly $980,000, and work is scheduled to take eight months, according to the Chicago Department of Transportation. Lane closures along Wilson, Lawrence and Lake Shore will be kept to a minimum.

How sidewalk will be divided

The width between the wall of the viaduct and columns supporting the bridge will not change, but posts will be placed to divide it.
