The annual Taste of Serbia Festival, hosted by Saint Basil of Ostrog Serbian Orthodox Church, offered something for all ages Sept 2 and 3.
Sofia Scalzitti, the event’s chair, said all aspects of Taste of Serbia are overseen by parish members and that its success has become a true team effort.
“What might surprise people,” Scalzitti said, “Is that Serbians are known for their hospitality and that this event also provides an opportunity to interact and to share Serbian cultural history with the larger community.”
The menu selections included Serbian specialties and imported beer and wine.
Visitors also enjoyed music and “kolo” dancing. An area for children was set up with giant inflatables and games. Inside St. Basil, visitors had an opportunity to learn about notable contributions made by Serbian-Americans and to attend presentations on Serbian culture and orthodox traditions.
According to organizers, there is great pride in the history of the church and in the settlement of Serbs in Lake County.
“The festival has outgrown the parish,” Scalzitti said, “But (it) continues to fulfill our passion for volunteering and welcoming others to St. Basil, and for passing down this tradition to our kids.”
