It may be more than a year away, but the race for Kane County clerk has already begun.

Stan Bond, a Montgomery Village Board member, has announced his candidacy for clerk in Kane County. The position has been held by John Cunningham since 2002 and the incumbent said he plans to run to retain his seat. Both Bond and Cunningham are Republicans.

While the 2018 election is over a year away, Bond thinks the additional time will help his campaign and added that the current clerk has been in office through many election cycles.

“One of the advantages of announcing and organizing the campaign early is its always helpful when you can spend that time building more momentum than fighting your way through a primary,” Bond said when making his announcement.

Bond served as deputy clerk in the county until a reorganization moved him to the Technology Department.

“I was assigned to the new judicial case management system in the circuit clerk’s office,” Bond said.

The county clerk’s office is the gatekeeper for elections, vital records and property tax billing, he said. Bond said his background in technology would be of use.

“There has not been a change to the Kane County clerk for 15 years. During that time, much has changed in the way of technology, IT security threats and timely public service,” he said.

Cunningham said while he isn’t officially starting his re-election bid today, technology is vital.

“I like my job, I enjoy it,” he said.

He said the county has just received a grant to use to pay for new election machines.

“I have brought this office into the 21st century” he said.

Bond is in his second term as a trustee in Montgomery. He is also an Illinois State Central Committeeman for the 14th Congressional District, chairman of the Western Kane County Republican Organization and Precinct Committeeman for Sugar Grove Township, Precinct 2.
