An autopsy is scheduled Friday for Anthony Moore, 29, of the 1900 block of Fescue Drive in Aurora, said Kane County Coroner Rob Russell.
About 11:05 p.m. Wednesday, Moore was westbound on Kenilworth Place in a 2017 Nissan Murano SUV, allegedly driving “at a high rate of speed” with no other people in the vehicle, police said in a statement posted on Facebook. The SUV struck a tree about 60 feet off the roadway, around where Kenilworth dead ends west of Kingsway Drive, the statement read. Police said it is unknown what caused Moore to crash.
While no one reported seeing the crash, a resident on the 2000 block of Kenilworth heard it and broke the vehicle’s windows in an attempt to help and found Moore inside just before first responders arrived, according to the statement.
Moore was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries that police said appeared suffered in the crash. Police officers found a 9mm handgun with an extended magazine inside the vehicle.
Police do not know if Moore was injured before the crash or why he was driving in the area, said police Detective Sgt. Don Flowers. Police have not determined if drugs or alcohol were a factor.
Evidence technicians are helping the Aurora Police Traffic Division investigate the crash, police said.
