Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Joey Sanchez, assistant facilities manager at the Wilmette Park District’s Centennial Park and Recreation Complex, 2300 Old Glenview Road, has been with the district for three years and divides his time between the complex’s ice rinks in the winter and its pools in the summer. On May 3, the Northbrook resident talked to Pioneer Press about his favorite sport, the music he likes, and more.

Q: What’s your favorite type of music?

A: Honestly, I really like 50s and 60s music. I grew up with my parents’ music, and the doo-wop stuff just caught my ear. I like a lot of Elvis, too. And I like the Four Seasons and the Temptations.

Q: What’s the best advice you ever got?

A: “Never let your left hand know what your right hand’s thinking.” I got that from my grandpa. I always took it to mean that you should keep things to yourself, get things done quietly, and do your thing without making a big deal of it.

Q: What’s your favorite sport?

A: My favorite is definitely hockey. I’m a hockey fan, I like to play hockey, my whole family loves hockey. I grew up in Edison Park, where we had a huge backyard, and my dad would flood it and freeze it, and make a rink for us in the winter. I’m a Chicago Blackhawks fan, too. You’ve got to go with the hometown team.

Q: Do you have a cause or charity that you’d like people to know about?

A: Multiple sclerosis. It’s one of the things that has recently been on my mind. One of my friends, his mother was recently diagnosed with MS, so I would like to do something to help in that cause, although I don’t know the name of any group, at least not yet.

Q: It’s spring, and everything’s in bloom. Do you have a favorite flower?

A: I don’t know. In spring, I take it all in, but I don’t really pay attention to the flowers themselves. If I think about it, though, I’d say white peonies. They’re big, and they’re very pretty.

Q: Finally, what would you say is a favorite comfort food for you?

A: That’s easy; my comfort food is mashed potatoes and corn. That’s my go-to every time. You can add gravy to it, if you’d like, that’s good too.
