A North Chicago man has been arrested and charged in a fatal hit-and-run early Saturday morning in Waukegan, according to police.
Waukegan Police Cmdr. Joe Florip said police were dispatched to the 00 block of Genesee Street at 4:30 a.m. Sunday for a traffic accident, and responding officers found that two pedestrians had been hit by a vehicle, which had fled the scene.
Killed in the crash was Jose J. Diaz, 28, of Waukegan. The second victim, a 27-year-old male, was transported to an area hospital with “moderate” injuries, Florip said.
By Saturday evening, Florip said investigators from the department’s Traffic Division and detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division who investigated the incident had made an arrest based on witness interviews and physical evidence left at the scene.
Arrested was Tony Salcedo, 25, North Chicago, who has been charged with obstructing a police officer during an investigation, leaving the scene of a fatal accident, reckless driving, improper lane usage, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, and driving in the wrong lane, according to Florip.
Authorities said additional charges are possible.
Salcedo was taken to bond court Sunday, and his bail was set at $100,000. According to Waukegan police, he posted the required 10 percent of that amount and was released on bond with a court date scheduled Wednesday.
