Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

There’s a lot to enjoy strolling our town this spring. The trees, lawns and flowers are showing off their best colors. But after a half century of Park Ridge springs, I can honestly say our school crossing guards are often the best part of the season.

I say that as both an educator and resident. As an educator I helped select and assign them in my township; but now as a retired resident, I get to watch them in action. Action that is far more than guiding distracted kids to safety; it’s the inter-action out there that impresses me. And it should you.

At their age, the students are little sponges. They are growing, seeking and becoming during most minutes of their day, whether they realize it or not. A friendly smile, a soft arm, an occasional word of encouragement are all part of the package at every crossing intersection. If you take the time, you will see it for yourself.

Hats off to our local legion of crossing guards, because on some day they’re the best adult thing to happen to our kids. And there’s no report card needed to confirm it.
