A 33-year-old Aurora man has been charged in the stabbing of a 27-year-old man earlier this month.
Michael R. Villagran, 33, of the 600 block of South Broadway, is charged with two class 3 felony counts of aggravated battery, one involving a deadly weapon and the other involving great bodily harm, according to charges filed Tuesday in Kane County Circuit Court.
Villagran is accused of using a knife to stab a 27-year-old Aurora man who is a relative of his girlfriend at about 10:20 p.m. April 9 after arguing with the other man at Villagran’s home, police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said in an email. Villagran allegedly ran from the scene, while the other man sustained non-life-threatening wounds to his abdomen and arms, Ferrelli said. The argument did not involve any other physical contact before the stabbing, and police have not found the knife, he said.
At about 4 p.m. Sunday , an Aurora police officer who recognized Villagran from previous contacts saw him standing in an alleyway near Fifth Avenue and Fifth Street, Ferrelli said. The officer knew Villagran was wanted on a 2008 warrant for criminal defacement of property and that investigators wanted to talk with Villagran about the stabbing, Ferrelli said.

Villagran was taken into custody without incident, and after police interviewed him, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office authorized the charges, Ferrelli said.
Listed in custody at the Kane County jail with total bail for all charges set at $51,500, Villagran is scheduled to appear in court at 9 a.m. April 28 before Judge Donald M. Tegeler Jr. at the Kane County Judicial Center.
Among Villagran’s prior convictions is a four-year prison sentence for a 2003 shooting police at the time said might be gang-related, according to Beacon-News archives. Accused of approaching a vehicle stopped for a traffic light and opening fire on the car’s two teenage occupants, injuring both, Villagran ultimately pleaded guilty to aggravated discharge of a firearm.
Since then, court records show he has also been convicted of felonies including aggravated battery of first aid personnel, aggravated battery of a peace officer and theft.
