A 25-year-old man was charged with shooting at four passengers in a vehicle earlier this month, killing one passenger and seriously wounding another, prosecutors said.

Curtis Conner appeared for a court hearing Saturday on charges of first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Courtney Lewis and charges of attempted murder of the three other passengers — a 19-year-old man, an 18-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man, according to court documents.

Conner is additionally charged with aggravated battery and discharge of a firearm.

Conner, of the 8200 block of South Ada Street in the Gresham neighborhood, was ordered held without bail by Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas, who said Conner was a danger to the community.

Prosecutors and police said that at about 12:30 p.m. April 2, Lewis and the three other passengers were riding in a blue Jeep Compass northbound on South Ada Street. About one block from Conner’s residence, near the 8300 block of South Ada Street, Conner exited a white, four-door vehicle and began to fire shots at the Jeep, prosecutors and police said.

About 14 shell casings were recovered at the scene, prosecutors said.

Lewis, of the 6800 block of South Cornell Avenue, was shot in the back near his spinal cord. The 19-year-old was shot in the back as well and was able to remove the bullet himself. Both were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where Lewis died and the 19-year-old was in critical condition.

The two other passengers were shot at but were not hit, prosecutors said.

Conner has two children and one on the way, his attorney said. He is due back in court Monday.
