Three pets died in a Thursday morning house fire in St. Charles that also left the home uninhabitable.

Two dogs and one cat perished in the fire, Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet said in an email. Firefighters attempted resuscitation but were unsuccessful, he said.

No one was home when a neighbor called 911 to report the fire, to which the St. Charles Fire Department was dispatched at 11:27 a.m. Thursday on the 3400 block of Oxbow Lane, according to a news release from Schelstreet.

Firefighters were on the scene within five minutes and made forced entry to the home, where they found a fire in the kitchen, according to the news release.

Firefighters brought the flames under control in about 30 minutes, but investigators remained on the scene for a few hours after the fire.

While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, officials believe it is accidental.

Officials said the home is not habitable and estimated the fire caused $90,000 in loss to the structure and contents.

The occupant of the house will stay with relatives, according to the news release.

Geneva, Batavia, Elburn and West Chicago fire departments assisted St. Charlese firefighters at the scene.
