Around 8:35 p.m., two teenage boys were riding without lights on their bikes near Marion and Sexton in an area where several vehicle burglaries have occurred, police said in a Facebook post.
Two police officers stopped the boys, ages 13 and 15, “to talk with them about the illegality and safety concerns of riding without a bike light,” police said on Facebook.
One of the officers asked the 15-year-old what was in the backpack he was wearing, and after the teen opened it up, police found a loaded .25-caliber semi-automatic handgun, police said.
The teen was charged with two counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon and taken to a youth home, according to police.
Around 9:10 p.m., two different police officers saw a Buick LeSabre without a front license plate fail to signal properly, and pulled it over in the 300 block of South Gladstone, police said.
As the officers got out of their squad car to talk to the Buick driver, who was the only occupant of his car, the man, Houston H. Redman, took off on foot, police said.
Redman, 25, of the 1300 block of Royal Drive, Montgomery, tried to run through some backyards but didn’t get far and was taken into custody on the 300 block of LeGrande, according to police.
As Redman jumped over a fence, an officer who was chasing him grabbed him around his body and both fell, police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said in an email.
Redman fought with the officers, refusing their commands to put his arms behind his body and reaching for his leg, Ferrelli said.
One officer finally got hold of one of Redman’s arms, the other officer took his other arm, and together they got him into handcuffs, Ferrelli said. No injuries were reported, he said.
As police searched Redman, a loaded, 9mm handgun fell down his leg and was quickly recovered, police said.
Court records show that Redman was charged with unlawful use or possession of a weapon or ammunition, a class 3 felony; possession of a firearm without a valid FOID card, a class 3 felony; unlawful use of a weapon, a class 3 felony; two counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, both class 4 felonies; resisting or obstructing police, a class A misdemeanor; and driving with a suspended license, a class A misdemeanor.
Redman is listed in custody at the Kane County jail, with total bail for all charges set at $150,000. He is scheduled to appear at 9 a.m. April 7 before Judge James C. Hallock in the Kane County Judicial Center. No attorney information was publicly available for Redman Thursday.
