Waukegan police are investigating an attempted bank robbery Tuesday morning and the armed robbery of a liquor store Monday night in what authorities said are unrelated cases.
At about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, an employee of Associated Bank, 1 South Genesee St., called the Waukegan Police Department to report an attempted armed robbery.
The suspect had fled without receiving any money before responding officers arrived, according to Cmdr. Joe Florip. He added that the suspect entered the bank, displayed a handgun and demanded money, but then fled the bank before any money was turned over.
Although declining to speculate on why the suspect fled without money, Florip said “the very fact that he entered the bank, displayed a gun and demanded money has us very concerned.”

The suspect is described as a male black in his 40s, with a graying beard, wearing sunglasses and a “skully-style hat,” according to police. He also was wearing a trench coat, and was described as having an average height and build.
Florip said Tuesday afternoon the department’s Criminal Investigations Division is working with the FBI on an investigation into the incident.
Police are asking that anyone with information about the attempted armed robbery call the department’s tip line at 847-360-9001.
In what Florip said was an unrelated incident Monday night at about 9:30 p.m., Waukegan police responded to Derby Liquors, on the 2800 block of Washington Street, for a reported armed robbery.
Upon arrival, officers spoke to an employee who said the business was robbed at gunpoint, according to reports.
The employee told police that a male suspect entered the business, displayed and handgun, and took money from the store, Florip said. The suspect was described as a male black, approximately 6 feet tall and about 180 pounds. He was last seen fleeing the store on foot, police said.
Waukegan police are not releasing the amount of money taken during this incident, Florip said.
Again, anyone with information is asked by investigators to call the department’s tip line.
