There is something strangely familiar about all the continuing shenanigans from the Oval Office, followed by all the continuing rush of fact-checkers and critics to dispute them.
It has to do with an untold story about the elected president of my suburban high school class in 1945. You say ‘what does that have to do with anything?’ Maybe this! The students colluded on what we thought a fine prank: Vote for the zaniest kid in the class. When the ballots were counted, Anthony was the winner by far. Whoops, democracy had just done our school in.
But before Anthony could give too many speeches or propose too many ideas, the faculty huddled. Free elections be damned, “we have to get rid of this kid before we spend all our time fact-checking and back-stepping what he says.” And so one fine day it was done.
Fortunately there is a Constitution that allows it to be done more properly today.
