player ready...Pierre Charpin was recently named the 2017 designer of the year for Maison & Objet, the pre-eminent home furnishings show held in Paris in January and September. A selection of the French designer’s work was on display at January’s fair, including collaborations with luxury lifestyle brand Ligne Roset, celebrating what might be called a sense of whimsical minimalism.

With a background in visual art and experience working in the Milan studio of British designer George Sowden (one of the founders of the Memphis group) in the early 1990s, Charpin eventually developed an interest in Italian design and the manufacturing process. Whether collaborating with a client like Alessi, the kitchen and housewares company, or creating an exclusive piece for a gallery, such as Kreo in Paris, he says he doesn’t distinguish between industrial production and smaller, more limited productions. “All my work has a common thread to it,” he stated in a Maison & Objet-produced video. “Everything is linked in a way.”

His high-end pieces for Ligne Roset might not seem immediately related, but they share sculptural lines and a sense of imagination and play. The 1980s-inspired Slice armchair, originally designed in 1998 and relaunched in 2016, can be extended with the addition of boldly colored blocks or “slices,” essentially turning it into a chaise longue. The Stump accent table, carefully hewn from a single piece of white Carrara marble, is more restrained in its design but nonetheless striking and versatile.

Meanwhile, the equestrian-inspired Mobidec footstool, boasting a saddlelike shape, makes a statement in arresting orange. No less dramatic is the Desa table lamp, a delicate column of mouth-blown opal glass with a black metal “belt.”

The best feature of Charpin’s contemporary furniture and objects is that they appear first as art, then as functional.
