My name is Blake Cedergren. I am a resident of Libertyville and a senior at Lake Forest Academy. This letter is concerning a recent column by Paul Sassone, titled “We need to keep working toward MLK’s dream.” Since I am a student who has grown up learning about the fight for equality, integration and segregation, I understand why the author urges us to continue to fight for King’s ideals. I think that what the author is explaining is very important to keep in mind. I agree that Martin Luther King Jr. Day is more than a day off. Being a student, I have learned of how important Dr. King was and is.

I along with all students, shouldn’t simply look at this as a day off, but a time to honor how much of an impact King had on America and race. We must also realize that we can help achieve what he worked on accomplishing, because there may be equality on paper, but not in reality. I truly believe that with a day like MLK Day still being recognized years later, equality in America can be absolutely achieved. I agree that we should continue to pursue King’s dream, because we aren’t quite there yet.
