Racing with a balloon balanced between two fly swatters isn’t easy. But it’s fun.

That’s one fact that families who attended a fun fair at Grand Avenue Preschool and Day Care learned as they also got a chance on Friday to get out of cold weather and enjoy time with one another and with friends.

The event for 3- and 4-year-olds and their families was held at the Grand Avenue Community Center in Western Springs.

The theme of the fair was camping and the outdoors. Children took part in a variety of related activities including fishing in a duck pond, practicing archery and eating marshmallows.

“It’s just a fun thing for them to do in the winter when it’s cold and ugly out,” said school co-owner Mary Rizzardini.

About 300 people attended including older siblings, for whom the event is a reunion.

“I have a lot of teachers who’ve been here long term,” Rizzardini said. “They (former students) get so excited to see their old teachers.”

The school has about 575 students, from 2-years-old to fifth grade.

It has locations in the Grand Avenue Community Center in Western Springs, at Spring Avenue and Seventh Avenue School in La Grange and at Highlands Middle School in LaGrange Highlands.
